In this chapter, we argue for a phenomenal conservative perspective on religious epistemology and attempt to answer some common criticisms of this perspective

Power spectrum multipoles on the curved sky: an application to the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey

    Get PDF
The peculiar velocities of galaxies cause their redshift-space clustering to depend on the angle to the line-of-sight, providing a key test of gravitational physics on cosmological scales. These effects may be described using a multipole expansion of the clustering measurements. Focussing on Fourier-space statistics, we present a new analysis of the effect of the survey window function, and the variation of the line-of-sight across a survey, on the modelling of power spectrum multipoles. We determine the joint covariance of the Fourier-space multipoles in a Gaussian approximation, and indicate how these techniques may be extended to studies of overlapping galaxy populations via multipole cross-power spectra. We apply our methodology to one of the widest-area galaxy redshift surveys currently available, the 6-degree Field Galaxy Survey, deducing a normalized growth rate f*sigma_8(z=0.06) = 0.38 +/- 0.12 in the low-redshift Universe, in agreement with previous analyses of this dataset using different techniques. Our framework should be useful for processing future wide-angle galaxy redshift surveys.Comment: 17 pages, 7 figures, version accepted by MNRA

The N2 Gateway Project 2005-2007 : analysis and an assessment

Includes bibliographical references (leaves 106-118).The Breaking New Ground Plan and its implementation in the pilot project known as the N2 Gateway is an important step in the conceptualization and delivery of social housing in South Africa. The National Department of Housing in BNG promotes the building of communities and not just the construction of houses as was allegedly the case in the previously built state housing. In practice, however, the N2 Gateway Project does not adequately adhere to the Breaking New Ground Strategy and is fraught with implementation problems. Whilst the N2 Gateway houses may in some cases be of a better quality, they are being built far away from economic opportunities and lack the specified social amenities and community facilities. The N2 Gateway project has been rushed, been plagued by poor planning and has failed to deliver within its time-frames. The failure to properly implement the N2 Gateway Project necessitates an analysis of the project and if necessary a review of the BNG housing policy

Microwave and tunable far-infrared laser spectroscopy of the ammonia–water dimer

    Get PDF
Microwave and far-infrared spectra of the H3N–HOH dimer have been recorded from 36 to 86 GHz and 520 to 800 GHz with a planar supersonic jet/tunable laser sideband spectrometer. The a-type pure rotational microwave data extend the previous m=0, K=0 A symmetry manifold measurements of Herbine and Dyke [J. Chem. Phys. 83, 3768 (1980)] to higher frequency and also provide an additional set of microwave transitions in the mK=+1 E symmetry manifold. Two sets of five b-type rotation–tunneling bands, one set shifted from the other by an approximately constant 113 MHz, have been observed in the far infrared. The splitting into two sets arises from water tunneling, while the overall band structure is due to internal rotation of the ammonia top. Nonlinear least-squares fits to an internal rotor Hamiltonian provided rotational constants, and an estimation of V3=10.5±5.0 cm–1 for the barrier height to internal rotation for the NH3 monomer. A nonlinear equilibrium hydrogen bond is most consistent with the vibrationally averaged rotational constants; with the angle co^s–1[] determined from , the projection of the ammonia's angular momentum onto the framework; and with the nitrogen quadrupole coupling constants of Herbine and Dyke. The water tunneling splitting and observed selection rules place constraints on the barrier height for proton exchange of the water as well as the most feasible water tunneling path along the intermolecular potential energy surface. An estimated barrier of ~700 cm^–1 is derived for the water tunneling motion about its c axis

Laboratory millimeter and submillimeter spectrum of HOC^+

The J = 1→2, 2→3, and 3→4 rotational transitions of the molecular ion HOC^+ have been measured in the laboratory at frequencies from 178 to 358 GHz. The data should permit astronomers to confirm the recent possible sighting of the J = 1→0 transition of HOC^+ in Sgr B2 at 89.5 GHz
